Risks Involved with Infrared Inspection of Electrical Systems
OSHA and the National Fire Protection Agency consider arc-flash the number one risk when working on energized electrical equipment. An arc-flash occurs when phase to phase or phase to ground contact is made resulting in a powerful blast containing molten metal and temperatures hotter than the sun.
Arc-flash risks are the highest while removing and re-installing electrical panel covers during an infrared inspection. We find that a lot of panels have broken fasteners and loose components that require extreme care and proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling them. Our trained and experienced inspection teams understand these risks and strive to make infrared inspections as safe as possible.
